How divorce works

Divorce can take up to six months to finalise. You’ll also need to reach an agreement about children and finances.  Here’s how the divorce process works. Start the process by calling our experienced family law solicitors.

STEP ONE

Application

Prepare and submit your divorce statement and application.

STEP TWO

20 Week Reflection

An opportunity to reflect on your decision and work through any child or financial issues.

STEP THREE

Conditional Order

This stage says the court sees no reason why you cannot divorce. It was previously called a Decree Nisi.

STEP FOUR

6 Week Wait

After the conditional order, you need to wait six weeks and one day (a cooling off period) before your Final Order.

STEP FIVE

Final Order

The legal document that ends your marriage. It was previously called a Decree Absolute.

What our customers are saying

95% would recommend SKB Law to their family and friends.

Our customers use Review Solicitors, the UK’s largest legal review site to share their views about SKB Law.

Even though I was based in London, SKB Law were extremely sensitive, vigilant and thorough with my divorce proceedings. I had a devious and tricky ex, so it was incredibly stressful. SKB were very understanding and supportive as I was very nervous and emotional, this made me feel very supported and empowered. I’m super happy with my result and will certainly be returning to them for any future advice and have already recommended them to others
